Perfume Samples vs Decants: What's the Difference?

Considering a perfume without committing to a full bottle? You may see both perfume samples and decants online. The terms overlap, but they are not always identical. The key difference is who prepares and packages the smaller quantity.

What is a perfume sample?

A perfume sample is a small quantity of fragrance intended for trying before you buy. A manufacturer sample is filled and packaged by the fragrance brand or its packaging partner, often in a branded vial or miniature. However, independent sellers sometimes use “sample” as a general term for small decanted quantities too.

What is a perfume decant?

A perfume decant is fragrance transferred from a larger original bottle into a separate smaller container. An independent retailer generally prepares the vial or atomiser and its label. A decant is not the same thing as an official sample produced by the fragrance house, even when the fragrance inside is genuine.

Perfume samples vs decants: key differences

Feature Manufacturer sample Independent decant
Packaging Usually brand-issued Prepared by the decant seller
Sizes Set by the manufacturer Chosen by the seller
Fragrance source Manufacturer's production Transferred from an original larger bottle
Official branded miniature? Sometimes No

Neither format is automatically the better choice. Think about how much you want to try and whether manufacturer-issued packaging matters to you.

Are perfume decants authentic?

A decant can contain entirely genuine perfume. Authenticity depends on the source of the fragrance and the care taken when handling and transferring it. The small container alone neither proves nor disproves authenticity.

Before buying, look for accurate fragrance names and concentrations, clear information about the vial size, straightforward authenticity claims and accessible customer support. Avoid listings that imply a third-party decant was officially manufactured or endorsed by the designer fragrance brand.

2ml vs 5ml vs 10ml: which size should you choose?

2ml: try something new

Choose 2ml when you want a first impression and an opportunity to experience the fragrance's opening and dry-down. It is a practical starting point for comparing several scents without purchasing large quantities.

5ml: spend more time with a fragrance

A 5ml size gives you more chances to wear the perfume and understand whether you enjoy it over time. That matters because a scent can feel different from your first impression.

10ml: enjoy a favourite for longer

A 10ml decant is a useful option when you already like a fragrance but do not want a full bottle yet. The exact number of sprays varies depending on the atomiser, so advertised sizes are more dependable than promises about how many days a vial will last.

Why sample before buying a full bottle?

Fragrance descriptions can tell you about vanilla, citrus, amber or woody notes, but they cannot tell you exactly how those notes will smell to you. Sampling lets you compare a fragrance with your favourites and notice how it develops from the first spray to its dry-down.

It is especially helpful when comparing different concentrations such as eau de toilette (EDT) and eau de parfum (EDP), or when choosing between similarly named releases. If you prefer shopping by scent profile, explore our Find by Notes and Find by Accords pages.

Buying samples and decants in Australia

Check the seller's product descriptions, delivery coverage and returns policy before ordering. Perfume is an alcohol-containing product, so its shipping may be subject to restrictions. Perfume Library currently delivers within Australia; review our shipping information for current details.

Our returns and refunds policy explains eligibility. In particular, perfume samples and decants are not returnable for change of mind under our policy. This does not affect your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Frequently asked questions

Is a decant a fake perfume?

No. Decanting means moving fragrance into a smaller container. A genuine decant contains authentic fragrance from an original source. However, not every seller's authenticity claims can be independently verified, so choose carefully.

Will a decant smell the same as a full bottle?

When it comes from the same genuine fragrance and is handled appropriately, it should contain the same perfume. Differences in application, storage, batch, concentration, or contamination can affect the experience.

Are all samples made by the fragrance manufacturer?

No. Some sellers describe independently prepared decants as samples. Check whether a listing is for an official brand-issued vial or a seller-prepared sample.

Is a sample cheaper than a full bottle?

A smaller sample usually costs less upfront, but a full bottle may be cheaper per millilitre. Sampling may help you avoid paying for a large bottle of something you do not enjoy.
